description of course:
"PLAYING THE BOWED DULCIMER" (Kenneth Bloom):
This course was met with great enthusiasm in '03 and
'04, and will be offered again in 2005. The class will
probably be limited to no more than 15 students. See
prerequisites below.
Using a bow on the mountain dulcimer is a very old
technique going back at least to the 18th century. It
offers the dulcimer player a voice and
volume not otherwise available and gives would-be fiddle
players an alternative that is both accessible and
tuneful. This course will cover detailed and intensive
instruction in holding and using a bow. Using music (in
tablature and standard notation) from around the world,
Early and Baroque music, the class will start with
simple single line tunes, working on clarity, good tone
and volume, then progress to the use of drone strings
and double stops, as well as utilizing the bowed
dulcimer's ability to play half-fretted notes.
To participate in this class you will of course need a
bow and a dulcimer that is set up for bowing, and a
desire to dedicate 12 hours to learning this unique way
of playing the dulcimer. You do not need previous bowing
experience, but your standard dulcimer technique should
include an ability to play tunes smoothly as well as
make basic chord changes. If you have any questions
about obtaining bows, setting up dulcimers for bowing,
obtaining a bowed dulcimer, or anything else having to
do with this unique class, contact Kenneth at
